Isn't this more about many SaaS'es being generally unprofitable because they're reliant on investment for growth? Tech companies are famous for being unprofitable for years because of all the startup/investment culture. The "average profitable company" you're comparing them to includes stuff like General Motors and kebab chains (traditional businesses that were either profitable from day one or at least are old enough to have long passed/survived the breaking point)
