You should be really careful when taking someone’s advice on life, because people who tend to give out such advice usually don’t understand how generalizing and incomplete their advice can be. These tips can be well-meaning, but are often misleading.

Here are some of my favorites.

#1: Just do what you love, man

Just do what you love, man, and success will magically find you on its own. This is probably the most brutal piece of advice you could give to anyone.

First of all, let’s think about what the average human “loves” to do. I personally love binge-watching Game of Thrones. I love drowning in my old Spotify playlists. I love talking to someone for hours on the phone. I love remote vacations. I love posting a story to my Instagram.

Which one of these things is directly tied to money-making, or any measure of success? It’s great if it just so happens that what you love to do is somehow a marketable skill. But that’s super, super, super rare.
